Calculator assumptions: Quick Answer uses a smaller input set and broad planning defaults where values are not entered. The living-cost comparison includes dorm, off-campus, and commuting costs, but does not judge housing safety, lease quality, campus fit, or time reliability.

Page-specific sources: This page uses entered housing costs, roommate rent splitting, move-in costs, and full driving-cost assumptions for fuel, maintenance, insurance, depreciation, financing, parking, and tolls.

Data freshness: College costs, aid rules, loan terms, salary surveys, and school outcome data can change after the review date shown here.

Shared Journeys

Find the situation that sounds familiar.

College decisions rarely start with perfect numbers. They usually start with a real situation โ€” a dream school, a confusing aid letter, a major you love, or a loan amount that feels hard to understand.

Real shared journeys will appear here after review.

Calculator FAQ

Dorm vs Off-Campus vs Commute Cost

What does the living-cost calculator compare?

It compares dorm, off-campus, and commute arrangements using annual housing costs, roommate rent splitting, move-in costs, and full driving-cost assumptions.

How does the off-campus option split rent?

The calculator divides the monthly rent by the number of people splitting rent, including the student, then adds entered utilities and groceries.

How is commuting estimated?

The commute estimate uses round-trip miles, campus days, weeks per school year, parking and tolls, and separate per-mile assumptions for fuel, maintenance, insurance, depreciation, and financing.

Does this choose where I should live?

No. It is an educational cost comparison and does not decide safety, housing quality, family preferences, lease terms, or transportation reliability.

Bottom line

A college decision should leave room for life after college.

The goal is not to scare families away from college. The goal is to match the school, major, price, and borrowing plan to a future that still has breathing room.
